Genesis 28:13-15 (NKJV)
“…the Lord stood above it and said: ‘I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac…your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.’”
Powerful promises to Jacob! God started by making the connection with Abraham and Isaac so that Jacob would realize that the blessings to come were part of the ancient promises made to his ancestors, lest he thinks it’s something unique to him. But after that, God began to personalize the blessings to Jacob. “You and Your” began to re-echo and repeat because God wanted him to see that it was now his turn; the promises were now given to ‘you and your seed,’ showing that there would yet be a continuation to the next generation.
So while it’s important to get the blessings from the past, it’s more critical to ensure that God is speaking about bringing His blessings on our present and our future. If our blessings were only anchored in the past, then we would have nothing to offer to our descendants. Every generation must fulfill the conditions to warranty the continuations of the blessings from the past into the future.
Don’t just enjoy blessings from your ancestors; prepare blessings for your descendants.
“Amen, Lord. I will not only enjoy the blessings from the past. Lord, I will ensure that future generations benefit from the blessings of my life. Amen and amen.”
