THE GOD OF COVENANT

Genesis 31:3 (NKJV)

“Then the Lord said to Jacob, ‘Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you.’”

After all the crooked things Jacob had done, how can God still be speaking to him and promising to be with him? I would have thought that God would be angry with him and would cease talking to him. But God was still loyal to Jacob, and I cannot understand that.

The power of the covenant is hard to comprehend and interpret hence the tendency to abuse it. God had made a covenant with Jacob’s ancestors and with Jacob himself, and despite his many deceptive ways, God did not annul the covenant. Of course, it did not mean God approved of his tricky ways, but God was not throwing him away. God still had an agenda with Jacob in it.

Don’t give up on yourself when God has not given up on you. If you’ve entered the eternal covenant through Christ, then God still considers you His own, despite your many failings. He may not approve of all you do, but He’s in the process of making you all He wants you to be.

“Oh God of Covenant, how pleased I am to know that You still hold me dear to Your heart and that You are with me, despite my many failures and faults. The expanse of Your grace continues to overwhelm me, and I thank You for being faithful to the Covenant. Amen.”
