1 Samuel 25:33
“And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand.”
We are counselors and advisers, called to offer men the pathway to life and prosperity. So many walk in the valley of the shadow of death and are making decisions that lead to death. We are signposts that point to life.
A signpost does not force anyone to take any particular direction but makes it clear the direction we are headed. The signpost does not have the power to make anyone change their mind, but offers clarity on direction.
The world is full of people making wrong decisions every day. People are pushing ahead and falling through the cracks into the fire of fatal mistakes. Destinies are being destroyed because of bad decisions. Who can help them out?
David was on his way to making a monumental mistake. Out of fleshly fury, he would have destroyed Nabal’s entire household because of his foolish response. David would have killed scores of innocent people if not for Abigail.
Abigail was a signpost. She met David. She cajoled David. She spoke soothing words to David. She pampered his ego. She reminded him of his destiny. She called him to take the higher road of honor. And David responded to her.
People will respond to us if we reach out to them correctly. Many people will turn back from their self-destruction pathway if we point them in the right direction. We are called to be lifesavers by our words and counsel.
Signposts. Pointing men away from the destruction that lies before them. Giving them wisdom that heaven has given to us. Speaking the truth in love. Using all manner of righteous actions to woo men away from the pathways of death.
This is an honorable calling. As pilgrims, let’s embrace this assignment with passion. We are life savers. We are signposts. We cannot force change, but we can speak on behalf of our Lord and King and rescue many from self-destruction. Amen.
