1 Kings 1:37 (NKJV)
“As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may He be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
One of our greatest cries should be that the generation coming after us be greater than us. There can be no more urgent or critical prayer. One way to measure success is by the success of those who come after us.
But Satan is fighting this. On many stages, we are losing the battle to instill the same values and passions in the NextGen that we have. Of course, they do not need to follow our strategies, but they should not stray from Biblical values either.
Today’s devotion is less of a teaching devotion and more of a call to prayer for the NextGen. The only way the gospel will be preserved and perpetuated is by what happens to the NextGen Church. And prayer is a primary key in making this happen.
Good strategies are good, but a good strategy will never be effective without persistent prayer to support it. God has been with us. God has been with our generation in so many ways. The NextGen needs to meet God in real-time experiences as well.
It was God’s will for David’s dynasty to continue. God wanted His glory to be perpetuated in David’s lineage. But for that to happen, David’s children needed to walk in the ways of their father, and Satan was determined not to let that happen.
First, Adonijah tried to take the crown by force and deceit. God thwarted it and instead installed Solomon. Then Solomon started well, but we know how he got sidetracked. By the third generation, the kingdom was already in great crisis. David’s children had failed.
That’s why Benaiah’s prayer was spot on. “As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may He be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.” He saw into the warfare ahead and made that prophetic prayer.
This should be our prophetic cries over our children and the upcoming generation. We need to pray that they will indeed be greater than us in every aspect of life – in wisdom, skill, knowledge, resources, but most importantly, in spiritual capacity.
We need to pray that the NextGen will experience God for themselves. David was who he was because of his experiences with God. He had seen and tasted of God’s faithfulness, and this made his heart tender towards God.
Let us not relent in praying the prayers of Benaiah. “Oh, that God will raise faithful men and women who will stand for God in their generation after we have gone. Oh, that the glory of the latter house will be greater than the former.” Amen.
