Genesis 11:4 (NKJV)
‘And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” ‘
The fact that Man wanted to enter the heavens was not the error. The biggest problem was not that they built by their strength to penetrate the heavens (& not seek God’s face on how to enter His presence). The real error is found in their motivation. Desiring to do something great is laudable but why you do what you do, is what God will test. These people wanted a name for themselves. On the surface, it looked like they wanted to enter God’s presence, but in reality, they were more concerned about their ego and their fame.
Why do we do the things we do? Is our motivation right in our religious practices? Do we do things to be seen and recognized? Religion is weak because the heart of Man who practices religion is corrupt and self-seeking. This is why we turn to Jesus to purify not only our actions but our intentions. The inner intention is more important than the external expressions.
‘Lord, I know that so many times, my actions look okay but my intentions are wrong. I plead that you always work at purifying my innermost motivations and show me myself; make me see where my actions are not pure but are ego-centered. This I ask for, in Jesus name. Amen.’
