Genesis 19:16-17 (NKJV)
‘And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him… “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain…lest you be destroyed.”’
Move away from the plains of sin. As God leads us away from the life and people of Sodom, don’t resist Him. Lot lingered. He was a bit reluctant. What was holding him back? Whatever it was, it shouldn’t have. When judgment and destruction are released upon a people and a lifestyle, the best thing we can do is to step away from it lest we are consumed with it. Yes, intercede for and preach to them; but there’s also a place to step away when judgment has come.
The Lord was merciful to Lot (because of Abraham’s intercession), and that’s why He gently forced them away from Sodom. The instructions were clear: ‘escape, don’t look back, get far away as possible.’ May the Lord have mercy on us and lead us away from the plains of Sodom, even when we may be slow to move away. There are attitudes and appetites that we must flee from because they belong to the world system.
Don’t linger at the borders of Sodom. Move away and move quickly.
‘Yes Lord, I hear You. I will not linger around or within the borders of Sodom; for these are regions earmarked for destruction. I choose to flee from the unrepentant and the wilfully proud, lest I be corrupted by their ways. Tear my heart away Lord and turn my eyes swiftly to the cities of refuge, in Jesus name. Amen.’
