Matthew 26:67-68
“Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, ‘Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?’ “
I have never fully understood the depth of the humility of Christ. I still struggle to grasp the silence of the Creator before the cruel dealings of wretched Man. Jesus is too deep for me to understand. Jesus is too deep. It’s totally absurd that men struck Him, mocked Him and taunted Him, and yet Jesus, the eternal Word of God, kept silent and allowed it to happen. It’s totally absurd and can only be partially understood from the perspective of the divine plan for atonement.
But this is the call we have been called to make, and the life we have been called to live. The truth of the spiritual life is that unless we are willing to live this same manner of absurdity, we do not belong to Christ. We must be willing to be slapped and kicked, even when we have the power to retaliate. If heaven has not given us the permission to speak or respond, then may we remain silent and accept the pain and mockery. Mankind is intrinsically evil, and the spirit within the unregenerate Man will fight the Spirit of Christ in us. We cannot slap back and fight back and practice mockery as they do. We are a different specie and we must live out the spiritual life amid human cruelty.
“Jesus my Lord, how I want to live like You and to be like You in everything, but I fear that I may fail You. Since You live in me, please strengthen my inner being and show Yourself through me in the times of pain and wickedness from men. Please Lord. Amen.”
