THE SOUL-TRAP OF BITTERNESS

February 6, 2019

Matthew 27:39

“And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads”

Human beings are interesting creations. Even after they have succeeded to remove you from the place of perceived threat and they have supposedly succeeded in their schemes against you, some will still refuse to let go of their grudges against you. In this example of Jesus, it is beyond normal reason that even with Him hanging on the cross, those who passed by still blasphemed Him and wagged their heads against Him!! They knew that Jesus was about to die so what was the point of still cursing Him and shaking their heads at Him? It just doesn’t make sense, but that’s what happens when bitterness eats deep into the fabric of the human soul.

Oh! How we must insist never to let this happen to us. This type of cancer is not easy to cure or remove. Every form of rivalry, bitterness, and jealousy must be dealt with quickly and decisively, and the roots extricated from the fabric of our souls. If we don’t do this, its cancerous venom will penetrate our innermost being and hold us in its perpetual bondage. One fight that we cannot afford to lose is the fight to forgive, to let go, to release the past. Holding anyone bound in our hearts will only bring us into incurable agony of soul. It’s therefore never worth it because we will always be the loser at the end of the day.

“Father, I vow under Jesus never to allow myself to become prey to the bitterness that destroys. If ever I get into this trap, Oh Lord, rip the fabrics out of my soul in whatever ways You choose to do it. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”
