Romans 2:15 (NLT)
“They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.”
The inner voice of human conscience is a powerful compass to guide our actions. Even when we do not have the written Law of God, there is an inner law that works within our hearts that can direct our paths. This inner voice can either confirm when we are doing right or accuse us when we do wrong. Since we will not always have full knowledge of God’s will for every situation, we need to cultivate a sensitivity towards the voice of our hearts, that quiet voice that whispers on the inside.
And when we release our hearts more completely to the Holy Spirit, He takes over and heightens the sensitivity of our consciences, making us very tender to God’s will. It is this work of the Holy Spirit, working through our conscience, that brings convictions on our actions, whether right or wrong. We must not fight our conscience, on the contrary, we need to grow to cooperate and agree with it, even as we increase our surrender to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
“Lord Holy Spirit, I know I am naturally stubborn and heady. Hold my heart firmly within Your grip and let the voice of my conscience be Your hand guiding and leading me every day. This I pray, in Jesus name. Amen.”
