Romans 4:2 (NKJV)
“For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.”
It is possible to have something to boast in if the source of the boasting is you. If you feel you are responsible for the breakthrough in your life, and the blessings you are experiencing are the fruit of your effort, then you have a reason to boast in yourself. If Abraham’s works were the basis for his justification, then of course he had a reason to boast because his works were his strength before God. But we know that, “Abraham believed God and God counted him as righteous because of his faith,” – verse 3 (NLT).
We can never boast in anything outside of God. From our justification to our daily sustenance, we must live in perpetual thanksgiving for God’s goodness and generosity to us. Once we start to boast in ourselves, we lose the opportunity to boast in God. Those who boast in God are those who live by faith and see God as the Source of all goodness – spiritual and otherwise. Like our father Abraham, I choose never to boast in human works but in the graciousness of God.
“You are my boasting Lord. You are my only boast. My life and times are in Your hands. Amen.”
