Romans 12:21 (NKJV)
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
We are called to overcome. Evil is pressing in on every side looking for opportunity to squeeze us in, push us down and knock us over. That’s the constant battle we face. Evil is always inviting us into a different lifestyle; inviting us to be like them, to practice evil; but we need to resist it. We need to reject the onslaught of Satan to overcome us. We cannot and must not be defeated by evil. But how should we respond? How should we push back? What must we be doing beyond praying and waiting for God to intervene?
We need to be aggressive in doing good. We cannot overcome evil with evil. We cannot pay back in their currency. We cannot confront evil on his own turf. Our nature demands that we fight back by doing good. That’s why verse 20 says, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink.” Good overcomes evil, and even if it may seem not to, it actually does. The active power we have to overcome the lies of hell is the power of good deeds. The Holy Spirit is the life of God working in us to produce acts of love, mercy, kindness and generosity; displaying to everyone that we are different and live by different rules. No matter what the world does to us, the Holy Spirit ensures that we do not conform to their evil system. We are a different species, and we must be faithful to our nature of goodness in Christ.
“Lord Jesus, I bear Your mark. I am yours. I look to You to work out Your goodness through this mortal body, even when I personally don’t feel like it. In Your name I pray. Amen.”
