CONFESSIONS
“You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”- St. Augustine, Confessions
May we confess today that nothing else satisfies. May we confess that all of life is vain — outside of the rest that comes from knowing Christ. May we confess that all our affections and pursuits are but a fading mirage that will one day fade away into the sea of forgetfulness.
So what should really count? What should give us rest?
John 17:3 (AMP)
”And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.”
Rest comes in knowing God in real experience, and growing in this knowledge. Rest comes from anchoring your life on God and God alone. When your soul drifts into pursuits that are not centered on Him, you will become restless. Life is full of vain pursuits appealing for attention; but these offer nothing but the wind. All of life itself is empty outside CHRIST. Nothing here on earth can satisfy the deepest longing of the soul.
”I have tasted many things but I still end up drained, empty and love-sick. My confession is that I will always pursue only You my Lord, and I will ever remain restless until all of my being enters into deeper and tangible knowledge of the Most High. My confession is that all that life offers me becomes irrelevant compared to the sweetness of knowing You. You are my sweetest delight Lord. Deliver me from any other satisfaction. Never give me rest until all of my faculties find their rest only in You. In Jesus name. Amen.”
