1 Samuel 15:6 (NKJV)
“Then Saul said to the Kenites, ‘Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the children of Is…when they came up out of Egypt.’ So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.”
It may not seem profitable in the short term, and may indeed be despised as weakness, but we are called to show kindness to all peoples; especially to those in need. God loves the kind-hearted because He is kind-hearted. And when we manifest kindness, we are manifesting an important part of God’s divine nature in us.
And that is the main goal of the incarnation. There are many reasons why God had to live in bodily form as Christ, but one of the most important ones was to display how man ought to deal with each other. Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan because He wanted men to see what kindness looks like and how kindness is greater than religiosity.
The Kenites showed kindness to God’s people when they were weak and vulnerable, and they did not expect any kindness in return. They simply did what was the right thing to do. But the Amalekites saw a vulnerable people and, rather than help them, ambushed them. And God noted this. God saw the difference between the two groups of people and repaid each one.
God will repay. God is watching, and in due season, He will repay each one what is due to him or her. Therefore, I encourage you to always look for opportunity to show kindness, especially to God’s children. Don’t close your bowels of love and kindness when you have a chance. Do it out of love for God and for God’s glory, not expecting anything in return. But God will repay.
Unfortunately, because so many people have abused our kindness, many of us have become more hard-hearted than we used to be. We have felt abused, used and duped by many fraudsters and fake-stars; and many of us have closed our bowels of compassion for this reason. But I appeal to you today. Don’t let your negative experience change who God made you to be.
We have been re-created in Christ with His divine nature. He gives rain to the good and the bad. He lavishly blesses all on the earth. We cannot help but live out His nature. And being kind to all is one of the core natures of God. Kindness is not foolishness. Kindness is the wisdom of God.
