1 Samuel 17:58
“And Saul said to him, ‘Whose son are you, young man?’ So David answered, ‘I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.’”
There are so many things to pack into this devotion, but we will limit ourselves to only one thing. Remember, we said that if you stay faithful and focused, God will make men notice you. Yes, even the king had to inquire about David.
But what did King Saul ask about? “Inquire whose son this young man is.” (NKJV) Saul did not ask about who David was, but who his father was. Of course, he wanted to know David, but to know David, he needed to know where David came from.
Where do you come from? Where can you point to as channels of grace that shaped your life? If someone were to ask you that question, do you have a ready answer? Some say they are “self-made.” That’s such a poor answer.
Every man needs to identify the channels of grace in his life. You may be doing exploits today, but never forget that many invested in you through the years. No man is “self-made.” If you were made in any way, it was God at work through people.
When Saul asked David the same question, David was not ashamed to present his father’s name before the king. Even though it was not Jesse who had helped him kill Goliath, he gave honor to his father even in this.
Do you honor your father? Do you honor those that God used to influence and invest in you? They may not have brought you to the place where you are today, but they indeed served you in some way on the journey.
You may have the head of the Philistine in your hand today, but you were not always where you are now. Even the bad things that happened to you through your parents and leaders, helped shape who you are today.
So, don’t hold any grudges against them, even when they did not act in good faith. Remember that it is always God who is at work, even through the failures of men. Like Cyrus, they were God’s servants. Honor them.
