BEYOND DESIRE

1 Kings 1:4
“The young woman was very lovely; and she cared for the king, and served him; but the king did not know her.”

People have focused a lot on the need for desire, but I am beginning to understand that while desire is good and needful, desire is not enough. We need more than desire to impact our world for good. Let’s investigate this closer.

Desire is the inner hunger for something. Desire is that inner compulsion that pushes you in a particular direction. Desire is the motivation that compels you to arise to take action. Desire moves you to want to do. But we need more than this.

Capacity is the ability or capability to make your desire a reality. Capacity is the power that transforms desire into tangible action. Capacity is what forces change, pushes through obstacles, and presses forward to achieve a goal.

We need both. Without desire, capacity has no direction. Without desire, life is colorless and meaningless. Desire gives life purpose and meaning. But without capacity, we end up frustrated because our desires never become reality.

And this is the crisis. Many people have desires, but they lack the capacity to fulfill them. They know what they want to do and may even know how they want to do it, but they lack the resources to make it happen. This is why many are despondent today.

Look at the story of David. He had a young, beautiful woman lying with him to make him warm, but he could not consummate the relationship. This was the same David who had many wives in his prime. Yet, here he was, old and cold, and incapacitated.

The biggest thing we need for impactful living is not desire. We need capacity. Knowing what to do is good, and desiring what to do is good, but we need raw power to accomplish our goals. Impactful living needs power, and only God can give this. Simple!
