1 Kings 4:7 (NKJV)
“And Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household; each one made provision for one month of the year.”
In our previous devotion, we looked at how Solomon divided His kingdom between twelve governors and how he delegated several ministries among so many leaders. He did this partly because he needed them and partly because he trusted them.
The only way any system or organization can be run effectively is by getting the right people into the right positions, like they say, getting square pegs into square holes. When this happens, the wheel turns smoothly, and leaders can rest well.
But when this does not happen, confusion, ineffectiveness, loss, and other forms of failure begin to show up. Failure does not result from lack of effort. There can be much effort without success. Failure is often the result of wrong people in wrong places.
In God’s kingdom, He too is looking for the right people to occupy the right roles. Like Solomon, the Lord is appointing people into places of leadership and responsibility. He is looking for people He can trust to take leadership of His affairs in certain places.
This leads us to ask the following important questions.
Firstly: Do you understand your personal giftings and capacities? In other words, are you aware of how God has equipped you for service in these last days? This understanding will help you see the possible ways He wants you to take responsibility in the kingdom.
Secondly: Do you know the areas of responsibility God has put under your care? Put another way, do you know what divine assignments heaven is expecting you to fulfill on earth? Understanding this will give you clarity and focus in your service.
Thirdly: Are you faithfully carrying out the assignments given to you? It is one thing to know what God expects you to do, and it is another thing to be faithfully carrying out those assignments. Knowledge without obedience has no relevance.
And finally, what sacrifices are you making to faithfully carry out the duties assigned to you by your Lord and Maker? Faithfulness is not possible without some form of sacrifice, and because sacrifice is so hard, so many people fail the test of faithfulness.
In summary, our King has assigned responsibilities and is assigning responsibilities. He has specific tasks and assignments for every one of us. And on the Last Day, He will expect each of us to give an account.
So that our heavenly King does not suffer loss in His kingdom, may we grow in the grace of living and serving faithfully. May we be square pegs in square holes. And may we joyfully embrace the sacrificial lifestyle needed to be faithful to our King. Amen.
