THE SLEEP OF FAITH

February 23, 2017

Genesis 2:21 (NKJV)

‘And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.’

God caused a deep sleep to come upon Adam and he slept. God knew that unless Adam slept, he might be tempted to want to help God in producing the needed helper. Of course, Adam knew he needed help and he may have thought he also knew the ‘type of helper’ that would be suitable. And are we not like that? We tend to dictate to God the type of help we need. We give God measurements and dimensions and specifications; and of course, expect Him to comply, because since the helper is for us, we think we know what we need. But do we really know who and what we need?

Until Adam slept in deep unconsciousness, God could not help him. May we enter the deep sleep of God’s rest. May we enter the deep sleep of confident faith in God’s goodness and God’s Omniscience (all-knowingness). Hallelujah! There’s a help that God will bring our way, but it will only arrive after we stop struggling to tell Him what to do.

‘O Lord, quickly usher me into the sleep of the righteous soul, the sleep of deep trusting and unwavering baby-like rest; being confident that you do your deepest work in me while I sleep. O blessed sleep of heaven, rest on me today. Amen and Amen.’
