Genesis 4:4-5 (NKJV)
‘…And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.’
It was understandable that Cain felt sad because his offering was rejected and although the bible does not categorically state what was wrong with Cain’s offering, we get a hint as to why from this verse: ‘…the Lord respected Abel and his offering…He did not respect Cain and his offering…’ We can see that before the offering can be accepted, the life of the offerer must be approved.
May we stop focusing on the offering we bring to God but concentrate more on living acceptable lives before God. We may have great ideas and great programs but only an accepted life can produce an acceptable service that God will accept. As basic as this is, we often forget this foundational truth and we keep thinking that an acceptable offering will confirm our lives. O, what fallacy and what deception!! Unfortunately, several wrong teachings and doctrines have supported the fallacy. We need always remind ourselves that, it’s the altar that sanctifies the offering on it and not vice versa.
We need to slow down and constantly search our lives before pursuing our visions for God. Before the sacrifice is offered, is the life ready?
‘Lord, may I never experience the sorrow of Cain, whereby my offering is rejected based on my failed life. Help me, Lord, to focus on pleasing you right with my life, so that the ministries I offer you in your name, will be accepted in heaven. Help me always remember this Lord. Please. Amen.’
