A LEGACY

March 20, 2017

Genesis 4:17 (NKJV)

‘And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.’

Every father has a desire to leave a lasting legacy for his children, a heritage that can continue after they’ve left. Maybe because of the curse on Cain and maybe because he didn’t want his son to live the life of a vagabond and a roamer, Cain, therefore, built a city for his son and called it by his son’s name. This must have been an extraordinary feat and a great achievement for Cain; the only problem was that the heritage was very limiting. Cain left a city for his son in his son’s name, but what spiritual legacy did he leave Enoch?

May we labor not just to leave a physical legacy for our children but a special legacy. May we show them areas of our personal weaknesses and personal failures; and teach them not to fall into the same shortcomings. May we work to bequeath to them, a heritage that has eternal implications and dimensions. May we prepare our children not to fall into the same ditches that we fell into at their age. This is a more lasting legacy.

‘Lord, thank you for opening my eyes to see what I need to make a priority in leaving a heritage for my children. While leaving a financial or material legacy isn’t bad, Lord help me build and invest into them, a legacy that cannot be taken away, even an eternal legacy. Give the strength and vigor to do this earnestly, while I have the opportunity, in Jesus name. Amen.’
