Genesis 6:2 (NKJV)
‘that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.’
The sons of God took wives for themselves according to the beauty of what they saw in the daughters of men. This was an incorrect procedure for three reasons. Firstly, the choice of a wife must never be based on physical beauty. Physical and external beauty is very deceptive and has led many men astray, albeit both married and single men alike. Secondly, the choice of a wife must not be based on the sight of the physical eyes. Spiritual eyes and inward discernment are critical to truly seeing whom God may have chosen for you as a bride. Thirdly, they took wives for themselves, not that they sought God to give them wives. This is fundamentally flawed because, like Adam, we need to let God do the choosing for us and not us ‘taking’ wives for ourselves.
God was not pleased with this procedure practiced by the sons of God and His displeasure is seen in the proceeding verses. Yes, we can be sons of God and yes, God wants us to get married; but we must still subject the process of finding and having a wife, to the God in whose name we bear.
‘Thank you, Lord, for leading me and for finding an excellent and suitable partner for me. Lord, even as a married man, may my eyes never look to or see the beauty of women, for that is a distraction to the heart of any man. Teach my brothers and sons also, the discipline of letting you choose for them, and not them choosing according to their sights. This I pray in your name. Amen.’
