Genesis 16:2 (NKJV)
‘So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.’
This seemed like a reasonable request from Sarai seeing she concluded that the Lord had restrained her from having children (note, this was her conclusion, and not God’s verdict). But reasonable as it sounded, it was not God’s will for her to follow that path or make that proposal to Abram. And Abram should have known this and rejected it, but he didn’t because am sure it also sounded reasonable to him. Human wisdom sounds reasonable but it is often deadly in the long run.
Husbands; don’t always listen to your wives. Even though they mean well, you are still supposed to be the spiritual head of your home, and you are therefore required to ensure that your family is following heaven’s blueprint for your home. Not every well-meaning idea is from God.
Abram heeded the voice of his wife and Ishmael was born. Ishmael was not God’s will for Abram and Ishmael had to be cast out later by the same woman who wanted Ishmael born in the first place. The major lesson therefore, is: Listen to God before you obey your spouse.
‘Lord, I love my spouse dearly but I place my love for her below my love for you. You are above and beyond and I will seek Your face and seek to obey You at all times, even if it displeases my spouse. This is my commitment to You Lord Jesus. Amen.’
