A TRAGEDY

Genesis 19:14 (NKJV)

‘So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.’

This was a tragedy. Here was an impending judgment on the way but Lots sons-in-law and daughters thought he was just kidding. They could not see or understand the urgency of the situation. Without wanting to be too hard on Lot, the question needs to be asked: ‘Why did he give his daughters to the men of Sodom in marriage? Did he not understand the depth of depravity that these young men represent? Even if they looked innocent and harmless, didn’t Lot know that he was part of a covenant lineage and needed to continue that lineage, even as he bore in himself the mark of the covenant via circumcision?’ Those young boys had apparently taken Lots daughters into the dregs of Sodomic lifestyle such that the righteous cry of their father was seen as a thing of jest.

O! That we may raise our children to listen to and obey the voice of truth, righteousness and reason. O! That they may understand the depth of the covenant they represent and that we may be firm to teach and discipline them when they are yet young and mouldable. O! That our children may marry correctly with persons of the heavenly covenant and not fall into the rot of worldly compromises and appetites. O! That our children will always be conscious of the judgment of God and live to avoid it and lead others away from it.

So Lot did not save anyone from Sodom but lost his daughters to Sodom. That was a tragedy indeed. Could that be why Lots wife looked back?

‘O Father, deliver me from such a tragedy in my lineage in Jesus name. It shall never be my portion, in Jesus name. My children shall marry in righteousness and their families shall never consider the ways and Word of the Lord as a thing of jest, in Jesus name. Amen.’
