Genesis 22:5 (NKJV)
“And Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.’”
There were two very strange & absurd things about Abraham’s journey. Firstly, he saw the test as an opportunity to worship. I don’t understand this man. How does sacrificing your son become worship? Secondly, he declared that he would return from the mountain with his son. So what did he think would happen?
Faith is not easily understood except that it makes sense to do the unusual with God. Faith is a highly complicated thing because the Man of Faith manifests certain abnormal behaviors that may make him liable to be called a fool or insane. And yet, that’s what we are called to be: crazy lunatics following A REAL & SANE GOD. We must see every opportunity to obey God as an act of worship even when the demand to follow sounds ludicrously insane. We must trust God with all our being, knowing that He can do exceedingly abundantly above what we can think or imagine. That’s why Abraham planned to slaughter the boy but believed God would resurrect him again.
Yes, faith can be ABSURD, but that’s when faith becomes real.
“O Lord, grant me this ridiculous type of faith that can make sense out of an insane situation. Help me not to be presumptuous but teach me to hear Your voice and to respond correctly, even worshipping while obeying. This I ask in Christ’s Holy name. Amen.”
