Genesis 24:16 (NKJV)
“Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up.”
You can be specially endowed and yet be self-controlled. One of the things about having extraordinary endowments such as beauty is that it attracts all types of attention. Beauty is not evil because beauty is from God, but the steward of a beautiful body must earnestly practice self-control. Rebekah was beautiful and beautiful to behold. By all standards of beauty, she was very beautiful, and that is why scripture says people loved to look at her.
But she was a virgin. She had kept herself. She refused to be caught by the attentions and flattery of men. The attention of people never got to her head. She would not let a man touch her. She knew whom she was and to whom she belonged. She was a well trained young lady. Her parents so trusted her that they could let her go to the well alone to fetch water. They knew what she could do. They knew she had the strength to ward off strange companions. She attracted attention because she was beautiful but this was not her fault. She couldn’t do anything about that. But she was a well schooled, a well-groomed self-disciplined young lady whose beauty never got to her head.
Are you endowed with some gift, some unique ability, something that sets you apart from others? Praise God for this but never let it get to your head. Practice humility and self-control.
‘Amen Lord. Amen. May I stay humble and self-controlled despite the praises and accolades of men. Grant me the discipline to always so be, in Jesus name. Amen.’
