Genesis 31:44-45 (NKJV)
“‘Now therefore, come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.’ So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.”
In the days of old, a covenant between two people was binding once there was a witness. It settled old scores and cemented new friendships. The covenant was never expected to be broken and seldom was it ever. To confirm the covenant, there usually would have to be a sacrifice on an altar; after which a feast or meal is celebrated.
Jesus has cemented the relationship between God and man by His sacrificial death on the cross. In the presence of many witnesses, He confirmed the covenant and that covenant is binding today. And if untrustworthy men like Jacob and Laban could keep their bargain of the covenant, how much more our Lord from heaven?
“I arise therefore to feast and rejoice that the Eternal Covenant stands on the faithfulness of Jesus Himself. The pillar of our Covenant stands for eternity to witness, and that is the unwavering pillar of the Cross. Amen. Thank You, Lord.”
