Genesis 36:1-3 (NKJV)

“Now this is the genealogy of Esau, who is Edom. Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan…and Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth.”

It’s sad that Esau who was firstborn of Isaac and should have been the legitimate heir of the Covenant ended up being a non-entity in God’s plan simply because of his lack of carefulness and caution. And not only was he careless in despising his birthright, but he was also careless with the women he married. And at the end of the day, he ended up with what he shouldn’t have ended up with: a kingdom for himself but away from the Covenant tree.

The entire chapter 36 talks about Esau’s genealogy: his sons, his chiefs, his kingdom – but sadly enough, there is no connection anywhere in the chapter, to ABRAHAM or the God of his ancestors. So yes, he was successful, but he was also successfully cut off from the matters of eternal consequence.

“Oh God! May I never be known for my personal exploits or achievements, without connecting me to the God of my ancestors of faith. May I never build for myself a kingdom, that the Kingdom of Heaven has no involvement or investment in. Deliver me Oh Lord from hasty decisions that may permanently mark me away from heaven’s agenda. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
