Genesis 47:6 (NKJV)
“The land of Egypt is before you…And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”
Ability to deliver must be the overriding factor in employment. There are other ways to show mercy and sympathy, but it must not be in the management of critical responsibilities. So one of the disciplines we must develop should be the discipline of growing our competence. Competence is the professional ability to take care of an area of endeavor and have the skills and experience to provide high-quality deliverables. What that simply means is, to have strength and ability to do something very well. And this can be grown.
Pharaoh was sympathetic towards Josephs brothers. He gave them the best of the land. But when it came to managing his livestock, he would only accept those who are competent to do it; no emotions attached.
“Oh Lord, may we grow out of incompetence and may we nurture people around us to grow in competence. A competent man will serve kings. Grow us in the right disciplines that develop our competencies. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
