Matthew 5:7 (NKJV)
“Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.”
You will receive what you give. For those whom through loving-kindness and compassion extend mercy to others, they shall likewise receive mercy. This is the most straightforward beatitude. You receive what you give.
We so much want love, understanding, compassion, forgiveness, and kindness but we are ever so slow to offer it to others. What a pathetic irony. If we simply started showing more love within our small family and community, it won’t take long before the love becomes contagious and comes back to us. It’s weird how we so much need something from others, but we don’t extend the same thing to our neighbors in need. Mercy from God is our greatest need and here is a way to ensure we get it. If we show mercy to others, God will show mercy to us. And if we don’t show mercy, be sure that we also will not receive mercy when we need it the most. So open your inner bowels of mercy and pour it out lavishly. Don’t deal with men strictly on what they deserve, but show empathy, understanding, kindness, and forgiveness. You are more likely going to receive the same from other people here on earth, but also from your Heavenly Father who dwells above. Be merciful as your Father in heaven is merciful, and you will receive mercy from Him.
“Lord, I know there must be judgment and discipline and correction, and I know that evil needs to be punished and there must be justice; but Lord, please, open my heart also to feel concern, love, and care. Give me the right frame of mind that correlates with Your heart of mercy, so that I can also extend Your mercy to those who are broken, downcast and deserving of judgment. This I pray in Jesus name. Amen.”
