A WORTHWHILE AMBITION

Matthew 5:19 (NKJV)

“Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the Kingdom of heaven.”

Interesting that Jesus does not say that those who break these commandments will miss heaven or will go to hell; rather He says they will be called least in the Kingdom. And similarly, those who obey the commandments and teach others to do so, will not only enter but will be called great in the Kingdom of heaven. This means therefore that in God’s Kingdom, there will be different levels of importance and status. It’s never occurred to me that God would have a system of status in His Kingdom, but here it is in black and white. And your status in God’s Kingdom is tied to your obedience or disobedience to His commandments.

I must, therefore, work the works of Him who sends me while it is day, for the night is coming when I cannot work. And the works I do in His name, will determine whether I am called great or least in His Kingdom. Entering into the Kingdom or becoming a member in the Kingdom is by faith through the grace of God. But once you are in the Kingdom, your status is determined by your level of obedience to His commands. So work while you have the opportunity to determine your status in the Kingdom. Obeying His Word and teaching others to obey it is our surest path to greatness in the Kingdom, and there’s nothing wrong having such an ambition. Obedience equals greatness. Let your ambition be to be great in God’s Kingdom through obedience.

“Lord, it’s clear this morning that although I am in Your kingdom, it’s possible to be least in that Kingdom; and while some people may settle for that, I don’t believe that’s Your purpose for my life. If there is such a thing as greatness in the Kingdom, then Lord, I want to be great in it. Empower me afresh to renew my diligence in obedience, for if I keep disobeying You, so shall my status in Your Kingdom keep dropping. O Lord, renew in me the determination and enablement from above, to obey Your every word and to teach others to do so. In Jesus name. Amen.”
