Matthew 10:28, 31
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell…Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
There are different types of fear and we must separate and understand them. Fear is divided into two broad categories, namely positive and negative fear. In negative fear, no value is added. This fear is a scourge. This fear cripples and paralyzes. This type of fear stifles, oppresses and depresses. Of this kind of fear, we must refuse to accept because it suffocates faith. It makes Man ruler because we fear Man and it makes us continually second-guess God’s goodness and ability to protect and provide. This is bondage, and such fear is always limiting and withering to our spiritual lives.
But there’s a positive fear, a fear that adds value. This fear is the reverent fear of the Almighty. For the disciple who lives in this fear, he lives guardedly and restrictively because he is keenly aware of the Justice and Holiness of God. For those who have overcome the negative fear and operate in the positive, their lives are no longer subject to the crippling terror of human beings. We rise above what Man can do to us, and we begin to live in the faith of Jesus Christ, knowing of the certainty of God’s love and provision in all circumstances.
“Father, it is revering fear of You that I want to guide my heart and fill my thoughts. I am of more value than sparrows. Deliver me totally from the fear of Men and the fear of the unknown. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.”
