Matthew 12:15
“But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew from there. And great multitudes followed Him…”
The multitudes are a constant problem because they will not give you the space for some quiet and introspection, and these times of quiet reflection are essential to gain perspective particularly in the face of mounting opposition. It is critical for survival to learn to regularly withdraw for a short while, even away from the multitudes of people, assignments, family duties and urgent deadlines. All these things will always look like emergencies, and for this reason, we will feel compelled not to have time for withdrawal.
But Jesus withdrew. Once He understood that a new phase was about to begin (a more difficult and trying stage in His ministry), Jesus had to retreat to seek heaven’s mind and to prepare Himself for this new challenge. Never plan for the next season without having spent time for inward renewal and spiritual reflection. Those who stay with the crowd may not even discern when the new phase has come or may be too busy with the crowd that they are not ready when the challenges of the new season come upon him. Withdrawal is therefore essential for moving ahead in life and ministry; and for these times of retreat to happen, they need to be scheduled.
“O God, deliver me from the tyranny of the multitudes. Teach me afresh, the disciplines of quietness, reflection, introspection, and inward review; that I may be thereby equipped by You for the next advance. This I pray for, in Jesus name. Amen.”
