Matthew 12:32
“Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”
The greatest error is to find yourself sinning against or speaking against the Holy Spirit. This makes me afraid because one may actually end up doing this without knowing it. When we find ourselves in a situation whereby we directly accuse the work of God and credit it to the actions of darkness, this is a great error that has eternal ramifications.
There is a call for caution when we are unclear about a particular work. While we must not be afraid to judge evil and uncover the deceptions of darkness, we need a clear discernment that this is indeed a work of darkness. We must not also feel terrified by this verse and therefore condone evil plunderers in the Church. False prophets abound who are wolves in sheep clothing, and we must expose them for who they are, that the sheep of God may be delivered. However, we must not become frivolous and think that we are the only ones through whom the Holy Spirit is working, and therefore, we unwittingly call God’s work evil because it is not done by our group or not done in the way we expect God to work. Be strong to judge in truth but judge with carefulness and discernment.
“Father, You know I can never knowingly speak evil of Your Holy Spirit. Forbid me therefore from doing anything that will offend Your Spirit. Make me discerning and cautious particularly when things happen that I cannot understand. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.”
