LIFE CONTROL

Matthew 12:36-37

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Your life flows through your mouth and we are best known by what we say and how we say it. Men who speak a lot tend to divulge a lot of who they are because the outflow of words displays who we really are. Our words can, therefore, bring us great blessings or they can bring us a great curse. By our words will men either judge us as good and noble or as crooked and evil. For this reason, we need to have a firm control on what flows out of our mouths.

Choose your words carefully. Speak sparingly and speak when you need to speak. What Jesus calls an “idle word” are really words that needed not to have been spoken and therefore had no real merit or benefit. We tend to talk more than we should to prove our importance or relevance or knowledge. We need to gauge what we say, knowing that these words will need to be accounted for. It is a fearful thing to think of the accounts of heaven opened and we are judged not just by what we did but by the words we spoke. Remember, this is not Old Testament teaching; these are the very words of Jesus the Redeemer and Messiah. Don’t be frivolous with your words. Your words are your life. Jesus is the very Word of God, and therefore is the personification of the very Life of God. Control your words and you control your life.

“O Lord, I have failed so woefully here because my words have been too many and too much idle words have been uttered from my mouth. O God, have mercy on me and grant me the grace and discipline to control what I say and how I say them from henceforth. In Jesus name. Amen.”
