THE CONTINUOUS BATTLE

June 6, 2018

Matthew 12:45

“Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first…”

The problem with the naive believer is that having been saved and having experienced the blessedness of the new life, he thinks the battle is over. But on the contrary. When the work of redemption happens, it only initiates a life-long struggle between the forces of hell and the forces of God. We become a contested property and Satan never releases his vision for our lives. When we hear of a brother or sister who’s backslidden into the old ways of sin, it’s not because they were never saved in the first place; instead, it’s more likely that they became naive and careless and thought the fiercest days of fighting were over.

As Jesus said in the passage above, when a demon is cast out, the devil goes and brings reinforcements to try to regain control of his original domain. This is the battle, the continual struggle that the Saint must face. Satan continually looks for opportunities to take back his territory and he will employ all manners of tricks and seductions and confrontations, earnestly hoping for a victory someday. We must therefore ever live in constant vigilance of this satanic plot. We must be aware that the battle is not over just because we have changed camp. The contest is still on, and indeed, it gets fiercer as the Day of Christ approaches. Be on your guard lest your latter end be worse than your pre-salvation days.

“Lord, I hear Your clear instruction today. I ask that Your divine Holy Spirit and ministering angels work with me to secure my life from these evil forces and teach me always to stay alert at all times. In Jesus name. Amen.”
