Matthew 13:5-6
“Some fell on stony places… and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up, they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away.”
My withering will be the result of lack of depth in the Word of God. It’s not sufficient that the Word of God has entered my spirit, the soil of the spirit must be prepared to receive the Word before it can bring fruit. The ground must have the right texture, and the right amount of earth before the Word of God can thrive. The Word needs a particular type of atmosphere to reveal its full potential, and it’s our job to prepare our hearts for the Word to have an impact.
The disciplines of reflection, meditation and quiet prayers around the Word create the needed space and soil for the Word to develop deep roots. Unless we give the Word the space to grow roots, the scorching heat of trials and difficulties can wither away the initial gains of the Word in our lives. Don’t rush away with your new-found revelation. Don’t start talking about your new understanding of Scriptures without allowing it to grow roots in us first. Quietly nurture the Word into your spirit-man. Draw it deeper within. Let it first gain depth and spread within our hearts before taking it out there. We need not fear the scorching heat of Satan once we’ve taken time to develop roots with the Word.
“In this fast-paced world with so many distractions and obligations, Lord, I find it more and more difficult to give enough time to reflection and meditation on Your Word. Help me Lord, to insist on these disciplines so that Your revelations to me can stand the tests of Satan, in Jesus name. Amen.”
