MANAGING WEIGHTY ISSUES

June 29, 2018

Matthew 14:12-13

“Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself…”

After John was beheaded and after the disciples of John had buried his body, they came and told Jesus what had happened. When Jesus heard this, he stopped everything and immediately retreated from everyone to a deserted place to be alone by himself. Was he grieving? Was he reflecting? Was he crying? The bible doesn’t say, but we notice that he withdrew at such heavy and sad news.

When you need to deal with a weighty or heavy issue, make time to be alone. Before you seek counsel or continue in your daily life activities, withdraw for a while to think through and meditate over the issues at stake. Don’t just keep running forward and being busy. Stop for a while and enter into yourself and listen to your heart and the heart of God. What had happened to John was weighty enough for Jesus to stop for a while. It’s not spirituality or faith to keep pressing forward irrespective of the grave or grievous situations at hand. When confronted by something troubling and weighty, make time to be by yourself so that God can speak to, guide and soothe you.

“O Lord, the discipline to withdraw is my great need. The pressures of this life seem to make it impossible but I know I need to do this regularly, particularly when tough or painful situations hit me. Help me, Jesus, to so do. Amen.”
