Matthew 14:23
“And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.”
One great discipline is the discipline of praying alone, particularly at the end of your day. Although this is usually the time when we are tired, hungry and needing to rest; yet praying at such times is crucial for thanksgiving, for personal assessment and a recollection of the day. This discipline is not a communal discipline. This discipline is not the evening family devotion time. This type of praying needs to be done alone because it requires reflection and listening to God.
So, after a full day of ministry and having sent everyone away (including His closest disciples), Jesus withdrew to the mountain by Himself to pray. Of course, there’s no magical thing about praying literally on a mountain. Jesus went to the mountain because it was a place of isolation and seclusion. At the end of the day, find your mountain of retreat, just as Jesus did.
“Lord, my life ambition is to be like You, and seeing You make time at the end of the day for seclusion, gives me another discipline I covet from You. Oh, help me O, my God. Amen.”
