FAITH WITHOUT SIGNS

Matthew 16:4

“ ‘A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.’ And He left them and departed.”

These are some of the clearest, but probably harshest words of Jesus concerning those who follow Him because of signs and wonders. And my heart is gravely disturbed because most of what the Church is pursuing today are these very same signs and wonders. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and Sadducees because they were only willing to believe if He would show them signs. The real question, however, was: “hadn’t they been seeing all the other signs that Jesus has been performing, all the miracles and wonders? Why did they require their own personal miracle to confirm that Jesus was really who He said He was?”

We need to see all that Jesus has done and appreciate Him for whom He is without requesting Him to authenticate His person before us. Who are we to demand that the Almighty God prove Himself to us before we can believe? Jesus calls such people, “a wicked and adulterous generation.” We need to believe God for who He is and follow Him for whom He is, without first of all putting Him in the courtroom to prove Himself. True faith doesn’t need signs to believe.

“Lord, I believe You without You proving Yourself to me. I will not join the wicked and adulterous generation by insisting on seeing some signs and wonders before I believe. I believe You, Lord. I believe. Amen.”
