Matthew 16:23
“But He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.’”
Satan does not usually come with the open darkness we associate with him. Satan’s best and smartest tricks are usually enveloped around good things and good people. For Jesus, Satan manifested through His best disciple and most trusted associate. While the voice was the voice of Peter, Jesus could tell that the message was from Satan. Praise God for the spiritual accuracy of our Lord Jesus, but one thing that helped Him was that He had a spiritual yardstick of measurement.
Oh! How I long for this spiritual sharpness. How I need this divine yardstick. I need that deep understanding to recognize when the voice speaking is different from the intention behind it. I need to be able to identify Satan. Note that anyone who is mindful of the things of men cannot speak for God. My yardstick is the scale for acceptance or refusal. If the message (and messenger) is not centered on the heavenly revealed things of God and is proffering some wisdom to lead me away from the heavenly blueprint, then I must wage war against such. “Get behind me Satan” is my only response to anything or anyone that falls outside of God’s prescribed yardstick for my life.
“Satan, I give you no way to penetrate into my space. My eyes are on the things of God, and you and your agents have no portion in my life. By God’s help, your seductive suggestions will never penetrate my heart or my soul. Get behind me Satan, in Jesus name. Amen.”
