Matthew 23:15
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.”
When you have invested so much in bringing someone to faith, what do they become eventually? The interesting thing is that we don’t just bring people to faith; we actually bring people into a spiritual way of life that’s connected to our way of life. Our life shapes and molds the lives of those we touch spiritually. If we are walking deep with God, that is the same spiritual environment we will be inviting people into. Conversely, if our spiritual lives are epileptic, this will also immediately affect the spiritual progress of those whom we disciple.
Because the Pharisees were themselves “whitewashed tombs,” it meant that their disciples could not be any better than them. Jesus called such disciples, “twice the son of hell.” What a terrible description!! And incidentally, they were in such a terrible condition because of the people who brought them to faith. I must be very vigilant therefore about my life, not only for my sake but also for the sake of those who will come to faith through my life. The fearful truth is that the state of my spirituality will determine and influence the spiritual condition of those I disciple.
“Lord, may my life not be a negative influence on those around me. O God, use me to catalyze a deeper walk with God in those whom You bring close to me. In Jesus name. Amen.”
