Matthew 23:23
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.”
All spiritual matters are important, and all spiritual principles should be followed if we want to see prosperity. However, not all spiritual issues carry the same weight. According to Jesus, while we need to obey and live by all the instructions of the Law, some laws are weightier than others.
Justice. Faith. Mercy. These are weighty matters, and Jesus put a premium on our living in line with these pillars. A life that is unable to trust God is unable to please God. If we don’t show mercy to those in need of our love and mercy, then how do we expect mercy from God? Our world is full of oppressors, and we must make it our duty never to oppress anyone; on the contrary, we need to stand to defend the less privileged and the oppressed. Unlike paying of tithes, patterning our lives to reflect justice, faith and mercy are more critical indices of our correct spiritual tempo. I must live my life as a man of faith, a man who always shows mercy, and I must stand to defend the oppressed.
“Father, this is the cry of my heart. My faith is under attack, and it’s affecting my ability to love and help those around me. Renew my faith, O Lord, and grant me a fresh impetus to touch the lives around me. This I pray for, in Jesus name. Amen.”
