FIRST THINGS FIRST

1 Samuel 13:14 (NKJV)
“But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

Activities. Programs. Deadlines. Family. Business. Management – managing people, managing things. Making people happy. Responsibilities. Finances. Health. Ministry. These are but a few things that consume our hearts and keep us busy; always thinking and doing, every day. We wake up with these thoughts and go to bed dreaming how to accomplish them. These items fill our prayers and fuel our strategies.

But God wants to draw our hearts into something that will control and drive His overarching blessing on our lives. God wants us to always have an unquenchable desire for His heart. God wants us to live with an unquenchable thirst for His heart. To such, nothing shall be impossible.

Saul was given a kingdom and while he got busy managing his kingdom, he lost the simplicity and innocence with which he began. He starting running things himself, rather than seeking God’s heart. He lost sight of what God wanted for him and of him. So, God took the kingdom away from him.

We need to keep first things first – and the first thing we need to always keep first, is that continual aching after God’s heart. Doing God’s work must never be our priority. Seeking God is the priority worthy goal for which we were born. When we put this first, other things will find their rightful place. If we don’t get this right, we will ever struggle with men and situations.

Let first things always come first. Let your heart never stop aching after His heart. Never think you have mastered this. Never become familiar with this. Check yourself ever so often if this is your life priority. Be ever restless after God’s desire. Insist. God knows our busy schedules, but He still demands our undivided attention.

Don’t let life deceive you. Don’t let your daily agenda overtake you. Don’t wake up and start running. Start with Him. Chase after Him. Let your innermost being crave for Him. Ache with desire. He knows when we are genuine. He sees. And He will come through. But let’s put first things first. Constantly desire a heart that relentlessly pursues after His heart.
