CORRECT THEOLOGY FOR BATTLE

January 3, 2024

1 Samuel 14:6 (NKJV)
“Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, ‘Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.’”

To have a correct theology on life’s battles is an essential part of having victory over your enemies. We cannot escape the battles of life. If you don’t go to them, they will come to you. The enemies of your soul will always look for you. But how must we see them? How do we prepare for them?

David said in Psalm 27v6, “Now, my head shall be lifted above my enemies all around me.” We are surrounded by enemies all around, but there is a promise, “Your head will be lifted above them.” Don’t give them too much credit. See them for who they are: enemies to whom God will lift you over. That’s the correct theology for battle.

Jonathan was alone with his armor-bearer while the host of the enemy’s garrison was before him. But he wasn’t afraid or shaken by their numbers. He simply saw them as, “the uncircumcised.” What does that mean? It meant that he saw them for who they really were – a people outside the covenant of God and, therefore, could not be superior to him in any way.

Never look at unbelievers as superior to you. Never allow your heart to cast you down in the sight of the uncircumcised. They may have many things that you don’t have, but it does not make them superior. They may have more numbers, more trinkets, more earthly toys to play with, or more human prestige. I repeat; it does not matter. They are all uncircumcised; people outside the covenant of God.

Too many believers belittle the grace of God in their lives. Too many of us don’t see who we really are in the sight of God and, therefore, do not carry ourselves properly before unbelievers. To ensure victory, we must start with a correct attitude and a correct understanding of who we are vis the uncircumcised and all the spiritual hosts that surround them. Like Jonathan, we must define ourselves correctly and define them correctly as well.

Don’t let their garrisons intimidate you. This is God’s word to you. Don’t let their numbers or their voices make you shake. God does not operate by numbers. God’s presence is sufficient. Because you have Him, you are greater than the hosts of the uncircumcised. Believe.
