GOD’S SOVEREIGN CHOICES

December 2, 2024

1 Samuel 22:20
“Now one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.”

There are things we cannot understand about God and His choices, but we accept by faith what we cannot understand. We believe that one day, we will fully understand why God chooses to save one and not another.

This issue of God’s sovereign choice has been a topic of heated debate for centuries and has greatly divided the Church of God. But it need not be so. We must accept that there are things that God permits that will not make sense to us.

The haunting question that has troubled many minds is: “Why does one person get saved from disaster and another does not, especially when both are God-fearing people?” If not handled well, this question can paint God as guilty of negligence.

But we see things differently. We belong to the community of faith that believes in God’s goodness even if we don’t understand God’s mind and purpose. We know that God is not haphazard but does all things with definite intent. In this, we find rest.

In reverence, we submit to God’s will and pray that His mercy constantly locates us. We are the chosen of God in Christ, and by faith, we believe He will deliver us from all evil. And then, we leave the rest to Him.

In today’s passage, we see how Doeg the Edomite killed Ahimelech and everything in the city of Nob – men, women, children, infants, and animals. But one of the sons of Ahimelech escaped and fled to David. The question is: “Why was he the one?”

Abiathar was not better than the others in the city of Nob, but God spared him. Similarly, we are where we are today because God has spared us. Let us celebrate His sovereign choice to save us, and let’s lean constantly on His mercy.

Never take your blessings as a privilege or as a right. Knowing that many others do not have the grace you enjoy, walk humbly and submit to your God. Rather than question sovereignty, embrace it and worship your sovereign God.

Please, believe even if you don’t understand. That’s how to engage with God’s sovereignty.
