1 Samuel 23:2 (NKJV)
“Therefore David inquired of the Lord, saying, ‘Shall I go and attack these Philistines.’ And the Lord said to David, ‘Go and attack the Philistines, and save Keilah.’”
Because of our human limitations, developing the internal habit of seeking God before making any major decision is essential. Indeed, it is a good practice to let the Lord lead you in the small and big things of life.
Some may want to brand you as being “super spiritual” because you insist on seeking God’s will in all things, but that should be the normal flow of things for those who love God. Our human faculties are highly limited, and we can’t trust ourselves.
Does this mean we should wait to hear His voice in everything? Yes and no! No, we don’t need to hear an audible voice each time, and Yes, we need to receive His guidance each time. God speaks when He finds those who are willing to listen.
The key is developing the spiritual habit of naturally seeking His guidance. God loves those who seek Him. He reveals His mind to those who seek Him. Unfortunately, in our fast-paced world, this discipline is quickly disappearing.
Keilah belonged to the tribe of Judah, and when they came under attack, they appealed to David for help. The natural first response should have been to go and help them. But the Bible says that “David inquired of the Lord.”
Even when your natural instincts tell you something, please inquire first. To be doubly sure, the Bible says David inquired again a second time from the Lord (verse 4). Not every needy situation needs your response. Listen to God.
Also, don’t be afraid to be more specific in your inquiries. The more specific your desire for guidance, the more specific God will respond. David said, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” The Lord’s response was also precise.
God wants to guide us and use us to bless our generation. There are many Keilahs that need saving. The question is, “To which ones is the Lord sending us?” Inquire. If you’re still not sure, inquire again. This is the default lifestyle for every spiritual man.
INQUIRE FIRST!
